(Weeks 1 - 3) Life can be incredibly tough, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed by the challenges that come our way. WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) is a simple but powerful tool designed to help us navigate these difficult times. It isn't just a set of rules; it’s a personalised plan that puts you in the driver’s seat of managing and maintaining your own day-to day well-being and supports your recovery when experiencing health challenges. By focusing on your strengths and what works for you, WRAP helps you regain a sense of hope and control, even when things feel heavy. In Week 1, participants were introduced to the WRAP programme and the inspiring history of how it began. We explored the values and ethics that guide the programme, which were built on a model of peers learning from one another. These values include treating everyone with dignity and respect, holding each other in high regard, supporting the concept that each person is the expert on themselves, and validating every person's unique experience. Beyond these values, we discussed the five key concepts that are vital to wellness recovery; Hope, Personal Responsibility, Education, Self-advocacy and Support. These principles remind us that there is always hope, and that wellness recovery is possible for everyone, regardless of past or present struggles, and that it is up to us to take personal responsibility for our wellness, and to take action to make the changes we’d like in our lives. They also remind us of the importance of education and self-advocacy, which empower us to learn more about ourselves, understand who we really are, consider all our options and decide which ones are best for us and be able to speak up for ourselves and express our needs clearly, calmly and respectfully. Additionally these concepts highlight the role of support, recognizing that we thrive when we both give and receive help within our community.
To support this journey, the workshop facilitators provided each of the participants with a WRAP workbook. This resource is designed to help us take a more structured approach to applying these concepts to our day-to-day lives. By having a dedicated space to organize our plans, the workbook serves as a practical guide for staying on track and ensures we have a clear, reliable framework to support our ongoing wellness journeys.
The facilitators also shared their own personal recovery stories and the part that WRAP played in their own journeys, which provided valuable real-world context for these tools, all within the safe and welcoming setting of our face-to-face sessions.
In Week 2, the focus shifted to the 'Wellness Toolbox'. These are the practical tools that can help us to manage and maintain our physical, mental and emotional balance and well-being and serve as the foundation of our recovery. The facilitators opened the session by sharing their own Wellness Toolboxes, giving participants a first-hand look at the personal strategies they use to navigate daily life and keep on track with their wellness goals. Inspired by these examples, we split into small groups to brainstorm and consider the kind of things we might include in our own Wellness Toolboxes. Everyone shared ideas such as:
Collaborating in person allowed us to inspire one another with new ideas and discover things we might not have considered ourselves. It was a powerful reminder that we each have the personal agency to influence our own wellness every single day.
In Week 3, the attention turned to the first section of WRAP, which is 'The Daily Plan'. This is a simple structure for putting our wellness tools into action each day and contains three parts:
Understanding and being able to describe what we are like when we are well is important as it helps us recognise when we may be starting to fall out of wellness. In small groups, we then explored examples of things we may need to do daily to stay well; for example, showering and eating a healthy breakfast, and things we may need to do occasionally; for example, seeing a therapist or getting a haircut.
We then moved on understanding and managing our stressors and triggers. Participants explored the distinct characteristics of each and identified specific examples that can impact our daily lives; for example, work-related issues, noisy places or crowds or arguments or criticism. We also examined effective action plans and response strategies designed to help us respond effectively when experiencing stressors or triggers and to maintain balance and facilitate a more resilient recovery when challenges arise. We concluded by exploring some grounding techniques, providing us with additional ideas for grounding and self-soothing techniques we might include in our action plans for dealing with stressors or triggers.
